SUGI’s first pocket forest in Detroit
A Forest is Coming to Corktown this September!
This fall, something extraordinary is taking root right here in Detroit: a brand-new pocket forest at Kintsugi Village! Thanks to the generosity of SUGi and the Life Time Foundation and in partnership with the Brightside Collective and the Greening of Detroit, our community is about to experience the joy, beauty and healing power of an urban forest— together.
So, what exactly is a pocket forest?
Pocket forests are small but mighty ecosystems—dense plantings of native trees, shrubs and plants designed using the Miyawaki Method, which accelerates growth and boosts biodiversity. Although just 3,200 square feet in size, the Kintsugi Pocket Forest will feature over 1,100 trees and shrubs—a living classroom, sanctuary, and green oasis for everyone who visits.
Why it Matters
Detroit, or Waawiiyaataanong in the Anishinaabe language, was once covered in old-growth forests, wetlands and diverse plant life. By planting this forest, we’re honoring the cultural and ecological heritage of this land, while creating new opportunities for connection and growth.
Pocket forests not only beautify a space, but they transform it. These tiny forests help:
- Clean the air by filtering pollutants
- Cool neighborhoods during hot summers
- Absorb stormwater to prevent flooding
- Support pollinators and wildlife
- Boost wellbeing—studies show spending time around trees lowers stress and improves mental health
In other words, a pocket forest is good for the planet and for people!
A Living Classroom
At Kintsugi Village, nature is at the heart of learning. Our students, families and neighbors will be able to experience this forest not just as a green space, but as an interactive learning environment. Imagine children discovering butterflies, families gathering for outdoor story time or community members using the forest paths for moments of peace and reflection.
The Kintsugi Pocket Forest will grow right alongside our young learners, teaching them about care, resilience and the deep connections between humans and the natural world.

Community in Action
This forest isn’t just being planted for the community, it’s being planted with the community. On September 20th, we will host SUGi Day, where friends, families and neighbors can come together to put shovels in the ground and help bring this vision to life.
With guidance from SUGi’s expert forest makers, the support of Brightside Collective, and hands-on help from Greening of Detroit, our community will play a key role in nurturing this new ecosystem from its very first day.
