Many Hands, One Village

From the very beginning, Kintsugi Village has been built by many hands.

Some held shovels.
Some moved tables.
Some welcomed neighbors.
And all of them became part of the story.

When we first imagined Kintsugi Village, we knew we weren’t just building a place in the community. We were building something that belonged to it—shaped by its people and strengthened by their care.

So it only makes sense that our community would help build it – with time, energy, care and a little bit of sweat equity.

Before there was an official Volunteer at the Village program, there were already volunteers.

They helped us pull off our groundbreaking, when the Village was still more dream than daily rhythm. They helped welcome people into the building for our grand opening, filling the space with warmth and hospitality. They helped in the early days of Kintsugi Village School, when opening something new meant learning quickly, adjusting constantly and being grateful for every extra pair of hands.

And sometimes, those hands come covered in clay.

When Tracey offered to lead a pottery class with our kiddos, she brought so much more than a lesson plan. She spent hours preparing clay and gathering materials, many of which she donated herself. Then she spent two full sessions at Kintsugi Village, prepping, teaching, guiding little hands and helping our teachers bring the experience to life.

But Tracey’s care didn’t stop when the class ended.

She took every piece home, glazed them herself and made not one, but two trips back to Kintsugi Village so the finished pottery would be ready for our art show. Each piece carried the fingerprints of our young artists and the dedication of someone who believed their work deserved to be finished beautifully.

Volunteerism is not just the hours we count.  It’s the preparation, follow-through and care tucked into every detail.

And then came the forest.

When we planted our SUGi pocket forest—the first one in Michigan!—local residents of all ages joined volunteers from Life Time Fitness to help turn an outdoor vision into something real.

You may only see dirt, seedlings, mulch and muddy shoes that day. But one day, someone points to something living and says, “I helped plant that!”

This year, we officially launched our volunteer program to make it easy to raise your hand, sign up, show up and know where to go. More than a sign-up form, it is an invitation.

We kicked off this new chapter with volunteers from Ally Financial in the garden. They came ready to help and the weather came ready to test them. Rain moved in, but they kept going. Then a local adult soccer league came out to help too. They also met the rain. And they also chose to keep working.

We promise rain is not part of our volunteer onboarding!

But there was something joyful about it. When it rains, you see the good stuff!

People laughing while they work.
A little mud.
A lot of heart.

That is the kind of spirit volunteers bring and we’re so grateful when they choose to bring it to Kintsugi Village.

And volunteering has a way of giving back to the people giving back too! In a busy, screen-filled world, it invites us to do something real with our hands, meet new people, spend time outside and remember that community is something we practice.

At Kintsugi Village, volunteers have been showing up since day one. They have helped us celebrate, plant, welcome, organize, nurture and keep going.

They are helping us become exactly what we were always meant to be: a Village.

So come spend a little time with us.

You can sign up to volunteer or just receive volunteer opportunity updates on our volunteer page.

Bring your energy.
Bring your heart.
Bring your people.
And maybe bring rain boots, just in case.
