From the Inside Out

When we began building Kintsugi Village, we brought with us decades of experience from the for-profit world. We knew that not every lesson would translate perfectly to a nonprofit. But one belief came with us from day one: if you want to create a great experience for the people you serve, you have to start with the people doing the serving.

We call it building from the inside out.

That means our team comes first. Not ahead of our mission, but as the people who make that mission possible every day. We want Kintsugi Village to be a place where people genuinely enjoy coming to work, feel connected to one another and understand how their individual contributions fit into something larger.

Of course, compensation and benefits matter. We believe people should be paid fairly for the work they do. But creating a great workplace goes well beyond a paycheck.

It means leading by a clear set of values. It means recognizing people when they do something special, investing in training and development and giving them opportunities to grow.

Most importantly, it means caring about our team members in the totality of their lives — not simply as employees who show up for work.

Our values of responsiveness, kindness, personal touch and respect and dignity aren’t words we want hanging on a wall. They are expectations for how we treat one another every day.

We learned in business that when you get the inside right, the impact tends to move outward. People who feel valued are more likely to make others feel valued. People who feel a sense of belonging are more likely to create that feeling for someone else.

That’s especially important at Kintsugi Village because there are so many different people who experience this place. A child walking into a classroom. An artist working in a studio. A neighbor taking a cooking class. A nonprofit holding a gathering. A donor coming for a visit. A collaborator, vendor or volunteer helping us bring an idea to life.

We want every one of them to feel like they are part of the Village.

Recently, we took a day away from our normal routines to focus entirely on our team. We spent time doing visioning exercises together, talking about where we’re going and what kind of organization we want to become. We laughed, learned more about one another and strengthened some already close bonds.

And because this is Kintsugi Village, we ended the day in our culinary kitchen making our own personal pizzas together.

It wasn’t complicated. But it was a reminder that culture isn’t built through a memo or an annual meeting. It’s built in hundreds of small moments — how we communicate, how we recognize one another, how we solve problems and, sometimes, how we gather around a kitchen counter and make dinner together.

We’re still early in our journey and we’re learning every day. But we believe that if we can create a place where our own people feel cared for, connected and proud to belong, that feeling will ripple outward.

That’s how we hope to build the Village: from the inside out.
